SCOPE Update
December 23, 2005
Dear SCOPE Friends,
As the year closes, here's what's happening at SCOPE...
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
The SCOPE staff wishes you and yours a warm holiday season. We thank you for your continued commitment and faith in our processes again this year. We enter the New Year with energy and excitement in continuing to help you make Sarasota County a better place to live, work and play.
YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD NEEDS YOUR ENEGRY
SCOPE invites you to consider ways that you can personally get involved in making your neighborhood a healthy, safe and vibrant place. Join others in SCOPE’s Aging: The Possibilities community initiative at The Neighborhood Connections workshop on Wednesday January 11th, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Fruitville Library (100 Coburn Rd, Sarasota). You’ll discover how to get more connected with people in your neighborhood and turn good ideas and energy into action! RSVP to SCOPE at 365-8751. For more information on the Aging initiative please visit our website at www.scopexcel.org.
NEW COALITION TAKES FIRST STEPS
SCOPE volunteers, the Coalition Against Hate and other partners are proud to announce the most recent example of local community members working together for a better Sarasota County--the newly formed Coalition for Inclusion and Diversity (CID). Advocacy organizations, businesses and residents discussed goals and future activities. The Coalition’s vision is a Sarasota County where all residents thrive irrespective of age, color, disability, ethnic/national origin, gender identity, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. To work towards this goal CID will 1) convene members on an ongoing basis to build relationships 2) invite new voices to the conversation 3) initiate collaborations among members 4) build community capacity through learning opportunities 5) respond to community incidents contrary to our mission and 6) serve as an entry point for connecting to the diversity/inclusion community. Is inclusion and diversity a core value in your personal, associational or business life? If so, your voice is needed. Plug in by calling 365-8751. For more information on the Race & Cultural Relations initiative please visit our website at www.scopexcel.org.
INDICATORS COMMITTEE SET TO START REVIEWING 2005-06 COMMUNITY REPORT CARD
Every year, SCOPE publishes a data-packed report on Sarasota County’s quality of life. Known as the Community Report Card (CRC), it is beginning its fifth year as an up-to-date resource for people residing in, working in or visiting Sarasota County. As with every edition of the CRC, the Indicators Committee will review and evaluate the report to ensure that it remains relevant and compelling to our community. The updated 2005-06 CRC will be available this spring. If you would like to reserve your copy in advance, please contact Catherine Clouse at 365-8751. Check out our website www.scopexcel.org to find a copy of the report.
MARCH WITH SCOPE ON MLK DAY
Get your feet moving and blood flowing by joining SCOPE on January 16th 9:30 a.m. as we participate in the Martin Luther King Day March sponsored by the Newtown Front Porch Project and the Newtown Redevelopment Office. The March is a demonstration of community solidarity in working together to address the issues of our day with the same passion and commitment as the civil rights legend Martin Luther King. The march will begin at the North County Library on Newtown Estates. If you’re interested in marching with SCOPE call 365-8751. If you would like to register your own association, call the Redevelopment Office at 373-7764.
CELEBRATE DIVERSITY, SHARE YOUR STORY
A faithful partner in SCOPE’s community focus on Race & Cultural Relations, The Family Heritage House Museum is an African American gallery and resource center. Join the museum in a participatory project that will document the diverse experiences of community members – you included! The project is called “Many Faces…One Story” and the idea is simple: Share a personal story of a special person or unforgettable moment, family tradition or life experience that profoundly changed your life. The stories will be displayed as part of an exhibit at the Museum in February 2006. Do you have a story to tell? Contact SCOPE at 365-8751 for a submission-form and guidelines.
