- The Mentoring
Task Force, started by County Commissioner Paul Mercier,
adopted SCOPE's School Dropout Study recommendations
pertaining to mentoring and is convening mentoring agencies
for this work. Currently, they have produced an
informational video about the collective benefits of
mentoring. Also, they are working with Friendship
Volunteer Center to provide a "front door" for people
wanting to connect with mentoring.
- The
School District has:

Strengthened the Academic Improvement Plan and expanded
its use to include grades K – 2.

Created a new administrative position: Director of Academic
Intervention Programs to coordinate the district’s
efforts at bringing all students up to grade level and
reducing school dropout.

Provided for the Phoenix Academy where at-risk students
in grades 8 through 10 get intensive individual attention
and learning to use the latest technology as an alternative
to dropping out.

Has approved a proposal from district staff to build
a technical high school to provide an alternative for
students with technical career interests.

Increased guidance staff to provide enhanced guidance
services to students.

This
bi-County group is working to develop programs that connect
not only those in the world of formal education to solve
problems, but also business and community leaders.
- “The
Stories Project Toolkit” now available! It uses interesting
facts and thought-provoking discussion questions to get
viewers engaged in The Stories Project films. ITF members
will be hosting a Stories event for friends, clubs, and
other groups to watch and talk about these community issues.
