Sarasota County, with the help of local foundations, has
hired a Mental Health Coordinator.
- Over
100
law enforcement officers from the Sheriff’s office
and three largest municipalities have graduated from Crisis
Intervention Team (CIT) training. This training
teaches them to recognize and appropriately
handle situations involving people with mental illnesses
who are in crisis.
- Over
40 professionals from the legal and criminal justice fields
attended a Continuing Legal Education class on mental
illness.
- The
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Stakeholders Consortium
of the Community Alliance has a sub-committee that is drawing
on state, district, and local resources to create a Community
Mental Health Plan.
- The
Consortium, in conjunction with the Criminal Justice
Commission, has created a three-phase program to treat
people with addictions and help them regain a stable life.
- The
Sarasota County chapter of NAMI (National Alliance for the
Mentally Ill) held their first ever "Mental Health Education
Month" with the help of local service providers and
volunteers in May 2005.
- “The
Stories Project Toolkit” now available! It uses interesting
facts and thought-provoking discussion questions to get
viewers engaged in The Stories Project films. ITF members
will be hosting a Stories event for friends, clubs, and
other groups to watch and talk about these community issues.
