| Sarasota
County is a youthful community when measured by attitude and
lifestyle. According to the US Census 2000, 31.5% of the county’s
population is over the age of 65 and over 45% of all households
include someone over age 65. Nationally, we are seeing a demographic
shift as the large “baby boomer” population ages.
By 2030, there will be 70 million people in the United States
over the age of 65. Since
early 2005, SCOPE’s initiative, Aging - The Possibilities
has focused
on the role of seniors as untapped assets in our community.
How do we maximize the substantial talent of this population
and maximize the opportunities for individuals to age in place
with an active and independent lifestyle? Over 400
people have participated in this initiative, demonstrating
interest and enthusiasm for their community
This study began with
community conversations designed to create dialogue about
the possibilities for Sarasota County. A Community Assembly
in April 2005 helped the volunteers think more deeply and led
to the creation of Action Teams that met and learned about a
variety of aging issues.
The second Community
Assembly was held in November 2005. Nationally
recognized scholar and author, Nancy K. Schlossberg, spoke on
mattering -- the need to feel important and valued by others
and the community.
The third Community
Assembly was held in May 2006. The focus of this
assembly was on personal and community wellness and featured a
keynote address from Dr. Kevin O'Neil on the Six
Dimensions of Wellness.
After
Dr. Kevin O'Neil's presentation, participants discussed
their responses to a series of questions focusing on personal
and community wellness.

The Possibilities.
While the community will
determine the outcome of this study, overall broad objectives
include:
- Identifying best practices
for further exploration
- Developing strategies to
help people "age in place" for all
socio-economic levels
- Developing pilot projects
We encourage you to
participate, share your thoughts and connect to your passion
as we explore the possibilities for aging productively,
gracefully, and actively in Sarasota County.
